When my oldest was 18 months, we would visit friends whose neighbors who lived above them had a dog like that. It sounded like a bear stomping around upstairs. Was DS scared? No! Every time he saw that dog, he'd run squealing to give it a hug. I imagine he thought it was a giant teddy bear.  Come to think of it, the owner could've put a saddle on it and charged for rides.
