New here.  Can't find a story I believe is fanfic.

I remember reading a short story within the Deryni universe (unless I hallucinated it in a bad fever dream) which was set in roughly 20-th century Gwyneded.  The princess/heir's Deryni heritage was revealed to her by the current Duke of Corwyn.

Am I remembering correctly?

I wrote a modern-day story called "Balance of Power," though I think the Haldane princess in that one would have been aware of her Deryni heritage, although I think couldn't access her powers until she went through the empowerment ritual. Jerusha also wrote a modern story about the ducal family in Corwyn, with Alaric Morgan accidentally time-traveling into his future. Maybe one of those stories is what you are looking for? If so, check our respective sections of the fanfic board. If it's not one of those, I know the Fanfiction.net website also has a Deryni fanfic section under Books > K > Katherine Kurtz.

"Balance of Power" is novel length, though, so if you are certain it's a short story you remember, then it isn't that one. Jerusha's is much shorter, but I think was posted here in three or four posts, so maybe longer short-story or short novelette length?

That doesn't even sound the tiniest bit familiar to me, sounds like I need to go find it and read it right now. Takes a short break from writing.

As the discussion is joggling my memory (an unsettling sensation at best) I recall that the Deryni had had to go into hiding some decades after Kelson's reign.  This time they quite successfully created the understanding that Deryni were mythical, fictional.  But within certain families they had kept their traditions and skills alive.

OTOH it might have been a really good fever dream.

Thanks for the welcomes.  I'll check back later.

If it was a fever dream, then I expect you to write it and post it here as soon as it can be done. I give you until spring (I'm giving you some leeway, on account of the holiday season approaching). ;)

I don't recall reading any stories like that here, though I was gone from the forum for two or three years, so it's possible something like that was posted here during that time. But it sounds intriguing!

It could have been a fanfic story on Airsid.net but that site is dark.

Oh Nezz you do not want me writing relaxing fiction.
I'm an engineer by genes and training, and a former high school / community college math teacher.  And I'm about as stereotypical in those categories as you can imagine.

Heh. Once upon a time, we had a forum member who was convinced she wasn't the creative sort. She was a scientist through and through, studied physics at University, and was convinced she was crap at creative writing. But she had a fanfic idea and posted it here in great fear and trembling. And it wasn't half bad. She got enough favorable comments to try again. That one was even better. Eventually she became convinced that she wasn't awful at it, but still figured it was pretty amateurish. But just for kicks and grins, she tried the NaNoWriMo challenge one November (where you spend the month trying to crank out the first draft of a novel starting on the 1st and ending at the end of the month, forcing yourself to write at least a little bit every day even if it's total rubbish), and by the end of the month she had the rough draft of the first book of what later became a published trilogy on Amazon. Self-published, yes, but she paid for a professional editor and cover artist, and the story quality is a lot better than a lot of the other books available on Amazon, including a lot that I've read from traditional publishing houses.

Her name on here is AnnieUK. On Amazon, I think she uses AC Smyth. As far as I know, she's still a science nerd, she's just one who decided one day to try using the other side of her brain and try her hand at fiction. So give it a shot. Your brain's right hemisphere might enjoy the workout.  ;)

Found it!!

Princess of Meara by Snuffybear
The version I found came from Airsid and is a bit jumbled, but it's the one I remember.

I hope this doesn't mean that you've found what you were looking for and will leave us now. We love having new people come play with us. :)

Not leaving anytime soon
A friend has rekindled my interest in my old friend The Deryni Universe.  He's loaning me his Kindle version of Camber of Culdi.  Decided I'd reread them in internal chronology this time.  My hard copies are all boxed up somewhere (hopefully in my current ZIP code).
Meanwhile I'll putter around in the fanfic.

BTW :  In the Deryni Archives magazine v17 the author was identified as Marion Moebus.  "Snuffybear" was the attribution on the Airsid copy I found

Now - about those cookies.........
