Traditional Bonfire night (Guy Fawkes Day) eating.  Recipe is from a modern, well 1963, edition of Mrs Beeton's everyday cookery.

Ingredients:
2oz plain flour
2oz oatmeal
1.5 oz sugar (sort unspecified)
Half level teaspoon ground ginger
Half level teaspoon powdered cinnamon
Blanched almonds
Quarter level teaspoon mixed spice
1oz lard or all-purpose shortening (any fat animal or plant based which isn't butter)
1 level teaspoon bicarb of soda (or baking powder - same thing)
1.5 oz golden syrup
quarter of an egg (!!- or other binding agent)
Sift and mix flour, oatmeal, sugar and spices.
Add soda (bicarb), syrup and egg.
Mix well into a fairly stiff consistency
Form into balls and place a little apart on greased baking-sheets
Pot half a blanched almond on top of each.
Bake in a moderate warm oven (335-350 F. Gas 3-4).
Allow to cool slightly before removing from sheet.

"quarter of an egg"???

How exactly does one measure that out?
Now is life, and life is always better.

Scrambled egg for tea?  Or ignore and use milk or water instead?  Or multiply the ingredients and make more?

How exactly does one measure that out?

It's laid by a chicken quarter.

Yes, but which quarter?
