I'm not quite sure where to put this question, so I'll try here...and keep my fingers crossed.

What I'm looking for... Well, does anyone know what the mottos of the various ruling houses of Gwynedd and Torenth are? What words do the magnates have on their crests/banners?

Christian's family motto is "In Tenebris, Salus"... but what do the Haldanes or the Morgans or the Corises use? Is there a motto for Gwynedd? For Torenth?

We have the heraldry, but does anyone know (from the books or otherwise) what any of the mottos are?

Good question, and I am not sure if the books mention any. If so, they would likely be in the Codex, so if I happen upon them when I am searching through it, I'll add them here. I know the Codex entries mention heraldic devices if those devices are mentioned in the novels, but I am less certain if any family mottos are in there. The Codex is also peppered with quotes in various languages, but those might just have been quotes that Rob thought relevant to the entry, not necessarily any house mottos.

As an example of what I mean by the quotes, here is one that appears at the end of the entry for Furstan: "Dos linajes solo hay en el mundo, el tener y el no tener."  Google translates this to "There are but two families in the world, those who have, and those who have not," and cites it as a quote from Cervantes. Is it also a Furstan house motto? The entry doesn't say, though I could see it being one they would choose!

Maybe that could be a fun exercise, if the various Houses don't already have mottos mentioned in canon--coming up with some that would be suitable for them.

Well, I think I will be creating a house motto or two. That does sound like a fun exercise. Thanks, Evie!

You're welcome! This might be a good resource to mine for some ideas: Dictionary of Quotations
