Description: A pretty lass of 21 years old, single, medium height and descent strength due to working first as a servant, then a bar maid and now as an assistant to Elspeth. She has thick, long wavy, ebony colored hair, usually pulled back in a braid, but showing under a short veil. Large eyes of abalone shell gray with hints of lavender depending upon the light and rosy skin tones. Not the slim wisp of a girl that she was in her teens, just a little more mature in her feminine curves. Her clothes are typical for the northern climates usually consisting of three ankle length layers: linen shift, woolen Kirtle, and lightly embroidered surcoat of a faded blue which has a lavender tint due to its age, belted with a functional leather belt for carrying necessary working items on her person. Woolen cloak with hood for those northern rainy days. and thick leather boots. She carries a dagger, a gift from her father, and a second smaller dagger in her boot top. The guards working under her father taught her well how to defend her self with those daggers. On her belt hangs a journal in which in her spare time she is copying Elspeth's (her mentor's) medical grimoire, as she is now starting to learn to use medicine. She carries a few common medical instruments, medicines and bandages but nothing like what Elspeth carries in her own bags. Around Amy's neck is a small silver chain. The chain ends under her shift and only a very few people have seen the signet ring that hangs next to her heart. She receives a small salary from Elspeth and the tavern owner when she does work, but mostly she is paid in lodgings and food. Also her sister's husband sends her an allowance, which she is careful to spend only when needs arise. Elspeth's step-father, who owns the prosperous tavern that Amy works her evenings at, has seen that both Elspeth and Amy have sturdy Cassan Fjord ponies and heavy gear for traveling when they go to the convent outside of town to work there during the day hours. (Just added) Amy also carries the Adventure kit with all the normal supplies. In addition she carries two other water-skins. One with ale for her own needs and one with a stronger alcohol content (Brandy Port) for medicinal purposes only, of course.

Belief: Amy is perceptive to the emotions of those near her and to the world that surrounds her. With her ability to feel other's emotions and pain, she has gained a deep compassion to care for others. Her father is a strict man who believes strongly in the king's justice. Good acts require praise and criminal acts require punishment. Torn between her compassion and her father's strict code, she has learned the talent of sneaking out and staying out of sight in order to help others when her father would demand that she stay home.

Family Trade: Amy's father, Arthur Aldan, is the mayor of Droghera, a man elected by the people years ago, with the help of his benefactor, a wealthy nobleman who is a brother to the Baron of Stanzar. Amy's older half-sister, Chrysanthie, is married to Master Stanley, the cheese merchant in Droghera; they have five children, the last are twins. Amy's grandmaman, Dalla, on her mother's side, also lives with them. An elderly woman now, but she was born in Drumlithie near Kearney, and is known for her certain talents of sensing the lay of water beneath the ground and the flare up of fires that get out of hand. It was whispered that she was a seer because she can tell when a man lied, but Dalla was not Deryni, for that had been proven long ago when she was young. Dalla taught her granddaughter the talents she had and called them Second-sight. Amy also has two younger brothers both still living with their father in Droghera. Her mother passed away when she was 16 and her traumatic upset over her mother's death delayed her father from instantly marring her off. He finally sent her to a rich man's estate to work as a servant and to spy for him.

History: Four years back, at the request of her father, she had become a serving girl at the Estate du Chantel. Regularly, she sent coded letters to her father of what was happening at that estate. She hadn't really understood why she had been sent there, the work was hard and tedious, without reward. Then one night a prisoner was brought to the estate and her compassion overcame her discretion. She never knew if her efforts had saved his life, but to save her own life, she ran away, back home, hiding at her half-sister's home until the war with Meara was over. When her father came home from the war, he was furious with her for having left her position at the estate. When she feared his disappointment was too great to bear, she ran away from Droghera. A woman named Elspeth found her, helping her get work at a tavern and later as they became friends began mentoring her in medicine to help people in pain and in need.

And here I go, right behind you.  Sigh...

Player:  Jerusha

Character:  Elspeth Rowan

Heritage:  human

Heritage Trait:  Physicking

Character traits:
Alchemist
Educated
Resolute

Hit Points: 6

Movement: 25 feet

Grit: 3

Weapons proficiency: Ranged

Weapon:  Bow

Characters appearance and gear:  Age 29, unmarried female.  Medium height, medium build.  Wavy chestnut hair. Mismatched eyes:  the left one is a warm, amber hazel; the right is a bright, piercing, crystal blue.  Well-enough dressed for the stepdaughter of a prosperous tavern owner, she tends to dress in an understated manner with a discreet cloak and hood that will shade her face and eyes.    She tends to be a loner, except for family and a few carefully chosen friends.  She tries not to draw attention to herself and she does not smile often, because when she does, her smiles lights a room like the dawn of a new day.  She carries a satchel with herbal medicines and medical instruments, especially those suitable for a midwife.

Family trade: Midwife

Background:  Her father, Huw Rownan, was a sea captain, lost at sea with his ship, crew and oldest son.  The eldest son was named Huw after his father.  Known as "Little Huw," he was a head taller than his father and wide and strong as an ox. The term "little" never bothered him.  Elspeth is the middle child; she adored her father and older brother, who gave as little notice as possible to her odd appearance.  To discourage the younger brother, Carew, from considering a career at sea, Elspeth's mother married a prosperous tavern owner when Elspeth was 17.  Her younger brother turned out to be well suited to follow his stepfather in the tavern trade.  Though not yet as tall and broad as his older brother, his size put an end to most tavern brawls before they began.  And he was still growing.  Elspeth, however, was not suited to work in the tavern.  Her odd eyes put off most of the customers.  Carew had dumped more than one insulting patron outside the tavern and into the mud.

Instead, on a dark and stormy night (sorry, Snoopy) Elspeth had occasion to befriend the old village healer (human, not Deryni).  Elspeth began to study under her supervision, learning the herbs and remedies that could heal, as well as midwifery.  She is very talented at both, and soon the infirmarian of the small, mostly overlooked convent recognized Elspeth's talents and welcomed her to work with many of the convent's infirmary patients, especially pregnant women.

Belief:  I will prove my worth by my own skills and talents, and  the Devil hang those that judge me by my appearance.

Family Trade:

Belief:
Deryni are stuck-up, arrogant snobs who look upon Humans as children or pets, rather than equals.

Description:
Airich O'Flynn is the youngest of six living children of Earl Sean and Countess Celeste O'Flynn of Derry. A handsome young knight of 21 with blue eyes and straight light-brown hair (must be those Udaut genes) kept long and pulled back. About 5'10" and 175 lbs (equivalent of 6'/190 lbs in modern times), he's not physically imposing, but he doesn't look like a pushover, either.

He generally dresses as is typical of a knight: brown breeches, blue tunic, white belt, boots, leather jerkin, mail. In addition, he wears a cream-colored linen undertunic with an enchantment of protection. Helm, greaves, riding gloves.

Although a fully trained Deryni himself (on his mother's side), Airich has chosen to identify as a Human, and will generally not use his Deryni talents. Any Deryni who attempts Mind-speech with him will either be ignored or find Shields-up.

He's currently looking for Washburn Morgan with the hopes that Wash will be able to rid him of his Deryni "curse."

He doesn't actually hate Deryni (his freakin' family is Deryni), and certainly doesn't think anyone should be killed for being Deryni, but he thinks most of them could stand being knocked down a peg or two.

Gear/Equipment:

History:
Airich is the baby of his family. His parents married and then promptly had five children in seven years. The next eleven years consisted of several miscarriages, stillbirths, and babies succumbing to childhood illnesses, so Airich was considered a special blessing, and perhaps babied more than the other children.

He was raised as could be considered typical of other noble children, although he was not fostered out to another family. He received training as page, squire, and knight under the tutelage of his father and oldest brother, and additional training in the Deryni arts from his mother (who studied in Andelon) as well as classes at the schola.

Four years ago, he suddenly refused any further Deryni training and insisted that if a half-Deryni could be considered a full Deryni, then a half-Human could be considered a full Human. He's never spoken of why he underwent this change of heart or why he's a bit standoffish with most of his family.[/list]

Perhaps, nevertheless I see a good story coming from Airich, even if we can not get past is stubbornness for a long while.

This isn't the outcome, it's the beginning. Now we get to discover what happens next; I'm just as in the dark about how things are going to shake out as you are. :)

Gotta admit: I hope he doesn't join the mean priests, and I hope Feyd doesn't bump him off for possibly interfering in Feyd's plans.

Oh, I sure hope so! I figure if Bynw has some interesting characters to play with, he'll be less inclined to just kill us all. ;)

Hopefully, Airich won't die in their first chance encounter on the road with some randomly rolled bandit. :D

Player Name: Marc_du_Temple

Character Name: Bede Archer

Heritage: Human

Heritage Trait: Resistance

Additional Traits:

Sharpshooter
Vigilant
Sneaky
Strong
Precise Attacker
Quick Shot

Hit Points: 6

Movement: 25 feet

Grit: 3

Weapon Proficiency: Ranged Weapons

Additional Weapon Proficiency: Light Melee

Weapon Mastery: Bow

Character description:

Family Trade: Bowmen by trade. Last in sight on the field and first to fire. In the woods, they're never seen unless they wish it. At faires, they hustle archery when they aren't openly flaunting their trickery with projectiles.

Belief: Lay Christianity. Fears and respects the Deryni. Feigns indifference to politics after being on the losing side of the last uprising. Has a reverence for Deryni healers as blessed by God.

Simple background:

The earring is from a girl he was sweet on but lost during the uprising. What he doesn't know is that she's still alive.

The knife is his father's. He died in the war.

Bow made by his uncle. He lives.

Clothes are from two years ago.

Scars are from injuries received in the last battle of the last war, four years ago. He was bested by an enemy archer with a shot to his spleen. It became powerfully infected, causing pustules and abscesses all over his abdomen. These were treated in a convent where he sought sanctuary three years ago, by a Deryni nun. She implored him to give up his rebellious ways, but he felt as if he still has something to prove, and so he became the hireling and performer that he is today, at twenty going on twenty-one years of age.

Has spent most of the last four years vacillating between the Buffer States and working right under the noses of the Haldanes and Corwynns, although his family is originally from the lands of the rebels.

Player name:
Revanne

Character name:
Edwin Scrivener

Heritage
Deryni

Heritage trait
Power

Additional traits
Brawler
Educated
Sneaky

Hit points: 6

Movement: 25 feet

Grit: 3

Weapon Proficiency
Light Melee

Weapon Mastery
Fists
Dagger

Family Trade
Scrivener though Edwin is at present a student at Grecotha University

Belief
Beginning to feel somewhat cheated because his family don't make much of being Deryni. Mixing with his social superiors at Grecotha has given Edwin a bit of a chip on his shoulder and a burning desire to escape Culdi and the family workshops. You have to fight for what you want.

Description
Edwin is 19 - medium height, thin, and fit, though with just a hint of what could turn into a beer belly if he doesn't watch out. Aged 19, he is brown haired and handsome enough when not suffering from his latest student binge. He is well though not flamboyantly dressed and when travelling carries a largish pack with a change of clothes, the means of keeping clean and pens, ink and parchment. The ability to write a letter for someone in a tavern has often come in handy. He also carries the standard adventurer's kit.

His family are scriveners in Culdi who have benefitted from Ducal patronage over the years and now run a successful workshop copying books which monastic scribes would deem unsuitable - tales of adventure or courtly love and the like. Edwin's father felt that it would benefit the family if his bright third son studied in an environment where he would mix more widely with the sons of landed gentlemen, and thus gain potential future contacts. He hadn't quite reckoned on how much alcohol and brawling was involved! Edwin is VERY good in a brawl, but he has also taken to wearing a dagger and some of his weapons trained noble friends have taught him to use it passably.

He has a Deryni heritage but family history has led to an ambivalence about all things Deryni meaning he has no training and heretofore no interest in being trained.

His mother's father was a secret Deryni who finally felt safe enough to tell his human wife the truth in 1130, unfortunately causing her to miscarry their first child. They were reconciled through their wonderful human priest who had trained for the priesthood with Duke/ Bishop Duncan and several healthy children came along, but Edwin's grandfather never quite forgave himself, and though being Deryni was not regarded as being evil, or to be hidden, neither was it something to be developed or encouraged.

Edwin's father's side are very provincial and despite sending his son to university for sound commercial reasons, are deeply suspicious of anything foreign i.e. outside Culdi or Cassan. The family have long been proud of their second sight but their honest view of things is that Deryni is just a fancy foreign name for the gifts the good Lord bestowed on good border folk. This narrow perspective was not helped when Edwin's great-grandfather was murdered by Wencit alongside Duke Jared of blessed memory leaving his grandfather to care for his younger siblings as well as his own wife and baby. It was Ducal patronage under Duncan and then Dhugal which saved the young man who earnt his living copying out letters from penury and then into prosperity. What said Dukes get up to out of Cassan is "nowt t' dee with the likes o' us".

Edwin has some Deryni powers - he has found truth reading very useful as he negotiates his new life as a student- but is untrained. He has just begun to realise that his family perspective may not be the most helpful one for him. His experiences of the outside world are turning him into something of a rebel against family wisdom and expectations.

Three boys, but four children: I'm including Laurna's Amy in the children category (at least, as far as Elspeth is concerned).

But yes, there will be much trembling in Rhemuth tonight!

Elspeth may look at all three askance and wonder if it's better to take the veil or learn more about poisons.  ;D

Though with two brothers herself, she is no stranger to shenanigans.

I was also thinking about the fact that we have three Deryni in the group: one doesn't know she's Deryni, one doesn't care that he's Deryni, and one actively doesn't want to be Deryni.

Bynw's gonna have a field day with this. :D
