Title: Map of Rhemuth?
Post by: tmcd on June 13, 2025, 06:40:14 PM
I saw a reference in a post to there being a map of Rhemuth on a poster map of the Eleven Kingdoms. Is there an image of it available? Specifically, I'm wondering whether Rhemuth Castle is part of the city walls, so a royal force could march in or out through a castle gate, or more inside the city, where they'd have to move down a city street or three.

What I see on the map is that the castle and St. Hilary's sit on a hill at the west side of the city, and the hill bumps up against the Eirian river. The little paths from off the hill go into the city, although there are city gates close by. One of the little paths leads directly to the southwest city gate.

There doesn't seem to be a way to link attached photos to a post anymore (at least that I can find on my phone), so I can't attach an image of those details from the map, but I'll just add to what Nezz says by adding that there is a gap in the city walls where the hill is, but that side of the city is also protected by the hill being on the Eirian near the confluence of the Eirian and Molling Rivers, at a part of the Eirian that is wider than the castle itself, so it would likely be very difficult for an attacker to cross the swift river currents and scale the steep hill to the base of the curtain wall while the castle defenders are raining arrows or stones down on them. I don't think a siege engine would have the necessary range to throw stones across the river and uphill over the castle walls with great success either. (Though in my latest story, they tried anyway.)

You can buy an image of the poster map here:  https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/327254/eleven-kingdoms-map-of-the-deryni-world?src=hottest_filtered it's only $5.00

To send soldiers from the castle garrison outside the City, the nearest city gate to the Castle is Greengate, but that one only leads out to the King's Meadow, the triangle of land at the confluence of the Eirian and Molling. The nearest gate leading out of the City and to parts beyond would be further down Kingstable Street at the Millgate, which leads to Millbridge, the bridge that crosses the Molling River and takes you to the part of the Via Romana that leads you to Desse.

I do love a good map.

I'm very visual, so I rely on the Rhemuth city map a lot to help me visualize how to get to other parts of the city from the castle (such as for the occasional procession to the Cathedral or figuring out where the Gold Lion Inn in Market Square might be, relative to the gatehouse), not to mention where the enemy forces would have been encamped during the Siege of Rhemuth, how far their missiles might have been able to travel beyond the city walls (given that the siege engines weren't right up next to those walls but a small distance beyond them), etc.

A closeup on the castle can be seen on the Discord channel at

OOOF! The city wall stopping at the river?! If the castle has a substantial curtain wall, it's not evident from this drawing. It's a bad assumption to assume that a river can't be crossed. That seems like a "just sack me now" situation!

Thank you for the pointer and the zoomed-in image, Nezz.

That steep hill would also need to be scaled. I'm envisioning it as being on a height similar to Edinburgh Castle.

There's a map in the Deryni Adventure game - I think it's the same as the one reference above, just smaller and in black and white. It also has a map of Castle Rhemuth, which is quite helpful

That's the poster map. Of course the online version isn't poster sized but it's only 5 bucks and pretty good sized on the screen. Very usable for anything you need it for.
