[17:14] * KK has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[17:14] * chat.psionics.net sets mode: +q KK
[17:14] <DeryniBot> KK enters the chat as RainbowDragon passes around
a plate of cheese.
[17:14] <jemler> kk!
[17:14] <Bynw> hiyas KK
[17:14] <RainbowDragon> Greetings, KK!
[17:14] <Dov> welcome Katherine
[17:14] <bereft> well come, kk
[17:14] <Debbie-VB> Hi Katherine!!!!!
[17:14] <KK> Hello, folks.
[17:14] <DesertRose> Holy smoke, I actually caught KK in here on my
first time coming in!
[17:14] <DesertRose> *fangirls and faints*
[17:14] <Samuel> hello kk
[17:14] <jemler> she'll be gentle ;)
[17:15] <bereft> How is the packing progressing?
[17:15] * ambush-afk tackle-pounces kk
[17:15] <Mistyck> hiyas kK
[17:15] <ambush-afk> time for work
[17:15] <bereft> We are all eagerly anticipating your return to the
western side of the pond
[17:15] <ambush-afk> again
[17:16] * Bynw looks at the body of DesertRose as she faints
[17:16] <Bynw> hmmm we lost the newbie there ...
[17:16] <KK> Still packing. This past week we went to the storage
facility and pulled out the electrical appliances that had been
packed, and I re-homed them to friends here who can use them.
[17:16] <DesertRose> Nope, I recover fast.
[17:16] <ambush-afk> bbl guys n gals
[17:16] <DesertRose> See you later, ambush.
[17:16] <jemler> bye ambush
[17:16] <KK> Welcome, Desert Rose.
[17:16] <DesertRose> Thanks. *blushes*
[17:16] <bereft> European appliances do not work here, so you might as
well give them away
[17:16] <jemler> aaahhhh, isn't that cute?
[17:16] <DesertRose> lol
[17:17] <Debbie-VB> Shiral was here earlier but she had to leave. She
said to tell you "Hi"
[17:17] <KK> Yep--though I did discover today that my color printer
with scanner will work, with the change of a power lead.
[17:17] <Mistyck> cool
[17:17] <DesertRose> That's handy.
[17:17] <RainbowDragon> KK, will your computer still function
stateside then?
[17:17] <bereft> Tomorrow is her birthday, and her mom is throwing a
party for Sheral
[17:18] <jemler> does a European computer have the Return key on the
left?
[17:18] <Samuel> swap out the power cord and flip a switch on the
power supply and it should work fine.
[17:18] <Mistyck> yep Sam
[17:18] <KK> Not that I much use the printer as such, because Dell ink
cartridges are expensive, I don't need to do much color printing, and
I have a laser printer for print. But I'll have to replace the latter
once we move; this one is about 12-15 years old anyway.
[17:18] <Mistyck> mine from Okinawa worked fine
[17:18] <DesertRose> That's a long life for electronics equipment.
[17:19] <DesertRose> Our computer is trying to die now, and it's only
about five or six years old.
[17:19] <KK> Don't even have to slip a switch, same as on my laptop.
The power converter is part of the machine, and translates whatever
kind of power comes into it, into what the machine needs.
[17:19] <DesertRose> Oh, cool.
[17:19] <bereft> That's why you are making the move! You want all new
appliances!
[17:19] <Debbie-VB> Printers are relatively in-expensive . But do
they EVER soak you for the ink cartriges!
[17:19] <Samuel> that's sweet!
[17:19] * Kelos[Supper] has a FX-100 that still works. Getting ribbons
and paper is not easy, though.
[17:19] <DesertRose> Impressive, Kelos.
[17:19] <KK> It's an HP 4L--and yes, the cartridges are
expensive....but they last a loooooong time.
[17:19] <jemler> i used to use a Star NX-1000. great little dot matrix
printer!
[17:20] <Kelos[Supper]> (Ink's $7.50 apiece, when you can find it.
Paper? $51.00 per thousand sheets for latter-size.
[17:20] <DesertRose> I wish I had a printer at all. :D
[17:20] <Kelos[Supper]> Err... letter-size/
[17:20] <KK> Actually, most of the small appliances weren't that old--
or at least hadn't been used that much. Like a food processor, a hand
mixer, an electric coffee maker, a foot spa....
[17:21] <DesertRose> I figured it out,Kelos; I speak typo. :D
[17:21] <DesertRose> None of which will work this side of the Pond.
[17:21] <jemler> good one desertrose
[17:21] <DesertRose> Thanks.
[17:22] <KK> So among our first new purchases for the new house will
be toaster, electric kettle, an electric skillet. The other things
I'll buy as I need them.
[17:22] <bereft> Yes, but you can now get a flock of new ones, color
coordinated to your new kitchen
[17:22] <DesertRose> New kitchen toys, yay!
[17:22] <Mistyck> KK: have you had a chance to think about where
you're going to start the 3rd CM book at yet?
[17:22] <Debbie-VB> gotta love new kitchen toys
[17:22] <DesertRose> I just got a bunch of new kitchen stuff for Xmas,
including a bread machine.
[17:22] <jemler> desertrose, i like this one
[17:22] <jemler> peer has quit IRC (Connection reset by jemler)
[17:22] <KK> Only the kettle and toaster live on the counter. The
other stuff lives under cover, and white is just fine.
[17:23] <KK> No, Mistyck.
[17:23] <bereft> Stainless steel is the new vogue here in the states.
It goes with everything
[17:23] * Debbie-VB giggles take that peer
[17:23] <DesertRose> BRB, need to check on the ham in the oven.
[17:23] <Mistyck> well, I understand, you have a lot of stuff to do
before you move
[17:23] <KK> We're now aiming at a March 14th departure date--which
isn't that far away. Yike!
[17:24] <Mistyck> yeah, that's less than 6 weeks from now
[17:24] <KK> Shiny stainless, or brushed finish?
[17:24] <bereft> Yes, but when are the movers coming
[17:24] <bereft> Brushed finish. Shiny looks too commercial kitchen
[17:24] <KK> Movers have already been here. It's just the small
amount of stuff we moved here to survive while we sorted things out--
and a few things we've bought in the meantime.
[17:25] <KK> In a 200+ year old house, we have to be careful with what
we put into it.
[17:25] * Debbie-VB sends katherine good moving woodgies
[17:25] <bereft> So, you are basically camping out in your own house?
[17:26] <KK> No, we're in a friend's borrowed cottage, and will be
moving to our new/old house in Staunton, VA.
[17:26] <bereft> What about the critters?
[17:27] <Dov> Though a castle would make a great place to hold a
revel :)
[17:27] <Debbie-VB> That's a good question. will they have to be in
quarantine?
[17:27] <KK> Critters are here, and I have their travel arrangements
nearly finalized. Just have to arrange the Dublin/Heathrow leg of
their journey.
[17:27] <bereft> No quarantine to the states. We already have rabies
[17:27] <KK> No quarantine.
[17:28] <Debbie-VB> That's good. but they will probably have to learn
to meow with a 'murrican accent instead of an Irish acent
[17:28] <bereft> There would be a quarantine if you were going to
Hawaii, but to the rest of the states, no
[17:30] <KK> The accent thing is real. When we moved over, we brought
one cat, and he immediately terrorized the other cats in the
neighborhood by meowing with an American accent. he was also bigger
than most of them.
[17:30] <Mistyck> oh how cute
[17:30] * Debbie-VB giggles
[17:30] <KK> Our three boys are also very big, so I guess the Irish
cats near our first house were just smallish.
[17:31] <jemler> im gonna take off. see you all next time. have a good
week
[17:31] <Debbie-VB> Nighters jemler
[17:31] * jemler Quit
[17:31] * jemler has left IRC
[17:32] <bereft> KK, is the return address on the card you sent still
valid? I am sending out acknowledgement cards, and I do not want to
send it to the wrong place
[17:33] <KK> Yes. (Yipe, Kathi, I forgot that was your screen name--
sadly. You oding ok?)
[17:33] <bereft> I have about a hundred cards to go, but I think you
will especially like the prayer card
[17:33] <KK> doing
[17:34] <bereft> I am taking things one at a time. I think I have all
the credit cards cancelled, and all the banks notified
[17:34] <KK> Wow, a hundred cards--and you've already done some.
Sounds like you got tangible evidence of how Pat touched so many
people.
[17:34] <bereft> Oh, yeah. Lots of cards
[17:35] <KK> Have you found the paperwork you were looking for?
[17:35] <bereft> Mass cards, sympathy cards, prayer cards
[17:35] <Debbie-VB> I would have sent one, but I don't have your snail-
mail address. but Pat has definitly been in my prayers.
[17:35] <bereft> I got a neighbor to show me how to hack into the
computer, so I got all the passwords
[17:36] <KK> Excellent!
[17:36] <Debbie-VB> Sounds like you're not exactly a geek-girl kathi
[17:36] <bereft> The good news is, the will was in the computer. The
bad news is, it is invalid, because it is not signed, witnessed or
notarized
[17:36] <KK> Kathi may be a Luddite, but she has other talents galore!
[17:37] <RainbowDragon> was there not a paper copy somewhere?
[17:37] <Debbie-VB> I know. I saw some of her artwork when I was at
darkover that one time
[17:37] <KK> Bummer! Had she not done one before, when the cancer was
first diagnosed?
[17:37] <bereft> Actually, I think I would have done very well as a
medieval monk
[17:38] <KK> Yes, indeed.
[17:38] <KK> In a scriptorium.
[17:38] <KK> Doing page illuminations.
[17:38] <bereft> I can caligraph and illuminate with the best of them,
but electronic gadgets get me crazy
[17:39] <KK> Sometimes they drive all of us crazy.
[17:39] <Mistyck> yep yep
[17:39] * Kelos[Supper] is now known as Kelos_al-Hazar
[17:39] <Debbie-VB> well, my computer is being put to some good use.
I've got a program which helps in cancer research.
[17:39] <bereft> I have not yet found a hard copy of the will, but I
do not recall her ever going to the notary with one, or gathering up
witnesses to sign one, so no, I do not believe there is a hard copy
anywhere
[17:39] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Especially if, like me, you work on the
things. LOL
[17:39] <Dov> sorry time to share the computer. blessings all
[17:39] * Dov Quit
[17:39] * Dov has left IRC
[17:40] <RainbowDragon> yeah... we had to call tech support to
activate our trac phone and they had me putting in about a bazillion
codes into it
[17:40] <DesertRose> Computers and gagdets are wonderful....when they
cooperate. :D
[17:40] <Kelos_al-Hazar> When they don't, and my current machine is a
classic case, it's a true pain, though.
[17:40] <DesertRose> Truly
[17:40] <bereft> I tend to yell at them when they do not function as
required. It has the same effect as yelling at the cats
[17:40] <KK> Don't know about NY law, but I'm not sure that a will has
to be notarized--though it would have made things easier.
[17:40] <Samuel> The problem with computers is that they do exactly
what you "tell" them to do. They do not do what you "want" them to
do.
[17:41] <KK> Amen, Brother Samuel!
[17:41] <Kelos_al-Hazar> GIGO. Garbage in, Garbage out.
[17:41] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Basically.
[17:41] <DesertRose> Too too true.
[17:41] * Bynw huggles his computers ....
[17:42] <bereft> Remember, it is all ones and zeroes. That is
supposed to make it simple, no?
[17:42] <KK> If it were handwritten and signed, I believe that has
some validity--but a computer printout on its own is difficult, I
expect. Did she have any other family?
[17:42] * Debbie-VB wonders about bynw
[17:42] * Bynw huggles the Tika too since she isnt paying attention
[17:42] * Kelos_al-Hazar has gotten so used to the US-international
keyboard layout that he feels strange using the normal "US-102" layout
on callouts.
[17:42] <bereft> Pat has one brother, unbeloved, to whom she has left
$1
[17:42] <KK> What makes the US international keyboard different,
Kelos?
[17:43] <bereft> He is a nasty drunk that beats up women as a hobby
[17:43] <KK> Ah, that would expxlain why I'd never heard her talk
about any other family.
[17:43] <Kelos_al-Hazar> KK: It's the one with all the deadkeys... you
tried it and didn't like it much.
[17:44] <bereft> I could happily live the rest of my life without
Michael in the picture.
[17:44] <KK> I know that over here, I have to toggle to a US keyboard,
to get the " down where it belongs. Otherwise, typing dialogue is a
bitch.
[17:44] <KK> It's also a bitch when using rented fingers, as seems to
be the case tonight.
[17:45] <Kelos_al-Hazar> it basically means I can do a lot of special
chars (like ë or ñ) without using alt-####...
[17:45] <Mistyck> I think we've all had a case of typo-itis tonight
[17:45] <bereft> Ah, you, too have dyslexic fingers! That makes me
feel less incompetent
[17:45] <DesertRose> We can all translate typo to English, yes?
[17:45] <KK> Ah. I can get a lot of those in Word.
[17:45] <Mistyck> yeppers
[17:45] <Kelos_al-Hazar> lol
[17:46] <Kelos_al-Hazar> One of my characters actually grumbles to
another character, "I don't speak Gibberish!" and got looked at
strangely...
[17:46] <Debbie-VB> that's one of the first skills you learn in chat
DesertRose
[17:46] <DesertRose> yup
[17:46] <DesertRose> Too many of us have minds that move faster than
our fingers. :D
[17:46] <KK> Scott is fond of saying that one of the languages he
speaks is utter nonsense. :-)
[17:46] <Mistyck> heehee
[17:46] <Debbie-VB> lol
[17:47] <Mistyck> speaking of Mr. Scott--is he going to finish the
trilogy?
[17:47] <bereft> That language only comes to the fore when Scott has
been standing too close to the McAllan's for too long
[17:47] <Kelos_al-Hazar> One of the things I've run into with using
plain italics for telepathic comms is the difficulty in showing
emphasis if the phrase is short. :(
[17:48] <DesertRose> Boldface, maybe?
[17:48] <KK> Well, it's getting late here--and the dog decided earlier
than usual this AM that it was time to get up and feed him. Something
negative that he learned while boarding at the kennel: to bark for
food. Sometimes.... grrr.
[17:48] <Mistyck> take care Katherine and thank you for stopping by
[17:48] <Mistyck> hope you have a good week
[17:48] <bereft> bye, kk
[17:48] <Debbie-VB> Nighters katherine Sleep sweet
[17:48] <DesertRose> G'night Katherine; have a good week and good luck
with the moving.
[17:48] <Bynw> have a good one KK (check your email)
[17:48] <bereft> You never did say if the address was right
[17:48] <KK> We'll do our best. Talk to you next week.
[17:49] <Debbie-VB> Katherine, do you still have the same e-mail addy?
[17:49] * KK steps onto her Portal, waves good night, and disappeard
in a shower of green sparkles.
[17:49] <KK> Yes, same address for now.
[17:49] <bereft> tnx
[17:50] <Debbie-VB> OK. You will be getting a list of Cat resolutions
[17:50] <KK> Both terrestrial and cyber addresses are still ok.
[17:50] <bereft> So, does anyone have any special requests for food at
the Rampant Lion Pub this year?
[17:50] * KK Quit
[17:50] * KK has left IRC
