I was plotting a fanfic and wondering whether Kelson was being emo.

Then I wondered: if Alaric Morgan was emo, how could you tell?

Then I thought maybe he's goth ... but he'd be likely to sit with the punk kids at lunch.

Then it hit me: Deryni High.

Brion Haldane had been the football quarterback and team captain who had taken the team to multiple State championships. So all eyes are on his son Kelson, an entering freshman but already a phenom, almost magical.

But his mother doesn't want him trying out for the team, and especially doesn't want him hanging out with that delinquent Alaric. But Alaric is protecting Kelson from swirlies. The first season ends with Charissa Festil trying to give Kelson an atomic wedgie.

Kevin McLain is a wide receiver and is dating Bronwyn, a cheerleader. In the second season, Kevin is forced out of bounds and collides with Bronwyn, tearing both their ACLs and ending their careers.

In the third season, in the semifinal, co-captain Edmund Loris is doing everything he can to sabotage Kelson, even if it means the team going down. But Alaric laterals the ball to Warin Grey, who runs it in for a touchdown. The coach benches Loris, Corrigan, and a few others. Warin gets written out of the show afterwards for some reason. Maybe the actor asked for a raise.

In the final ep of season three, there's a few seconds left and Torenth is up by 1. The Torenthi QB hands off to Rhydon Sasillion, who runs it backwards for a safety, putting Deryni High over the top!

I think I need to take my temperature.

For goth, a youth of the time expressed it as (this works better aloud): [hand to forehead] "I'm going to die, die ... dye my hair black!"

I am far from a youth, but I have an impression of a goth being more attitude-y, reveling in the darkness in his soul, but emo would be gazing at his shoes. I could be wrong.

As for "if Alaric Morgan was emo, how could you tell?": at the start, he's wearing black and rings. (Mail, as it happens, but that's another form of rings.) And violating the rule of tincture on his armory, raising the middle finger to heraldic authority.
